Takotsubocardiomyopathy(TCM),firstdescribedinbySatoetal,[1,2]isatransientcardiacsyndromethatinvolvesleftventricular(LV)apicalakinesisandbasalhypercontractionthatmaysymptomaticallymimicacutecoronarysyndrome(ACS).[1,3]Asignificantemotional(eg,anunexpecteddeathofalovedone,adivorce,badfinancialnews)orphysicalstressor(eg,motorvehiclecollision,significantsurgery,astayintheintensivecareunit[ICU])typicallyprecedesthedevelopmentofTCMintwo-thirdsofpatients;thus,theconditionisalsoknownas"brokenheartsyndrome."
TheleftventriculogramshowsthetypicalappearanceoftheLVinthemidandapicalportionsduringdiastole(A)andend-systole.Intheend-systolicphase,aneurysmaldilatation(ballooning)oftheanterior,apicalandinferiorsegmentsoftheLVisapparent;therefore,TCMhasalsobeenreferredtoas"apicalballooningsyndrome."[1,3]
